The role of Queensland’s Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner

The role of Queensland’s Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner was established under Chapter 8A of the Environmental Protection Act 1994 to perform a number of functions including to:

  • provide independent technical advice on best practice management rehabilitation, that is based on general rehabilitation and management themes rather than specific resources sites, including for non-use management areas (those areas of land that are unsuitable for a post-mining land use)
  • provide advice on public interest evaluation processes
  • facilitate more transparency and better public reporting about rehabilitation.
