The concept of a Queensland Rehabilitation Commissioner was brought into the Environmental Protection Act 1994 in 2020. This role was legislated as an independent, statutory position that is responsible for producing leading practice technical reports, connecting with stakeholders and the community, reporting on trends and data, and providing advice on mine rehabilitation matters.
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is undertaking a review of the role of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner to ensure the role continues to meet its intended purpose and continues to provide value to industry and other key stakeholders. This review includes considering how the Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner and their office have delivered against the functions and purpose of the role since inception.
As part of this review, we are seeking key stakeholder views on the effectiveness of the Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner and their office so far. We will use the information collected to consider the Commissioner’s role in supporting the resources industry to improve rehabilitation in Queensland.
